There’s good coffee, hot sandwiches with a German twist and not a single paramecium of pretension in this bookstore cafe. The coffee shop, not pretending to be any more or less than that one thing, has thumped espresso into Half Price Books patrons’ veins for more than 15 years. The volume on everything - the street noise, the sputtering engines and the roar of U.S. If you’re headed to Black Forest Coffee, you’ll be fine. It’s a hectic day on Northwest Highway - the left turn lane that pushes cars onto Shelby Brook Lane has snarled into the highway, which means honking horns and those death stares from passing drivers as they zoom through the lanes. I would come back when again visiting family. For 20 bucks and some center-console change, there are two sandwiches - one with a heaping scoop of chicken salad and the other with hot ham and Gouda - two bags of chips, two Topo Chicos and a chocolate-dipped cookie the size of an American Ultimate Disc League Frisbee in the passenger seat. Even though this review might sound very critical, the certain foods are very good and very well priced. Service was excellent, fast and friendly. We struggle to understand why the fuss for the cakes but alas for all the years we've come to visit Dallas there really are no good bakeries in this town. Cake was the same for all 3, with no real flavor, a very light cake. We sampled black forest, german chocolate, apple strudel and chocolate mousse cake. The line to the bakery was 10-15 deep and people were purchasing whole cakes and walking out the door. The most dissappointing things were from the bakery. Brats as I said were excellent, nicely spiced and I would come back for them. That could be because of the cooking technique as thickness will dictate toughness if not watched carefully. Hungarian chicken was excellently seasoned with paprika, a nice touch, but the chicken was over cooked. pancakes are extremely small dice potato that does not lend itself to the crisp outside you would normally have if the potato was shredded. The grilled Bratwurst and red cabbage was the best of all that we sampled (also had the potato pancakes, hungarian chicken, red cabbage, german potato salad, sauerkraut, Hot Amsterdam). We stopped here for lunch while visiting family in Dallas and had a great lunch. Perhaps that is the key to Henk's apparent popularity. If we ever return for Sunday brunch, we'll order something else. Overall, we can't recommend the German fare, but we couldn't help but notice the huge, delicious-looking omelettes that other patrons were enjoying. Our food arrived promptly, and the service was attentive enough, considering the harried atmosphere of a packed little restaurant. Pancakes were not on the menu, but when she heard our three-year-old express a desire for one, she said the kitchen staff could manage that, and the result did look light and fluffy. Our delightful server was friendly and accommodating. The apple sauce was unsweetened, which appealed to one of us. At this moment in time, we can't comment on the cheese blintzes because they came home with us and remain uneaten in our refrigerator. The very light rye bread that started our meal also was quite good. In fairness, the potato pancakes were spot on. The potatoes were heavy in some sort of unfortunate tangy orange-colored sauce. We expected red potatoes, bacon, onion, and fresh parsley with a light vinegary flavor. The German potato salad didn't resemble anything we've ever had in the past. ![]() The two cutlets we received were tough and gristly. Good Wiener Schnitzel should be light and airy, with a delicate breading. Instead, the food reminded us of what happens when a German cousin who can't cook invites you for a delicious German meal. ![]() I, particularly, was looking forward to some good Wiener Schnitzel.
